TV's Most Powerful Moments :: A Lesson of Missiology

Here is what is utterly fascinating about this study - only three of these are before I was born; only three of these are before 1992; only three of these are things which happened before communication started becoming instantaneous.

Fourteen of these twenty took place within the realm of the internet - ala 1995 or later. Nine of the twenty took place while I have been in college - both undergraduate and graduate studies - 2005; which is also during the rise of the New Media (Social Media) takeover. Six of these have taken place while I have been attending graduate school (2010) with the rise of blogging, Twitter, smart-phones and only the exception of people under forty not having a Facebook.

Our culture has changed rapidly since the arrival of television. More so since the rise of instant communication. This quote by Sony Electronics VP Brian Siegel says a lot: “‘The study shows that we still turn to TV to inspire those [social media] discussions.’”

We use the New Media to find things out - then we get home and turn on our television. I remember finding out about Japan on Twitter - then watching it all night on CNN with my Twitter opened on my laptop to see what the world was saying.

More importantly, I find it fascinating how the most impactful moments of television have happened since the rise of the internet and is only increasing with the rise of the New Media.

How will the church use the New Media to continue the conversations our people are having with culture?
